How to Have Fun Without Alcohol

You’re sidestepping offers for office happy hours, or zoom happy hours. Welcome to the Hello Someday Podcast, the podcast for busy women who are ready to drink less and live more. I’m Casey McGuire Davidson, ex-red wine girl turned life coach helping women create lives they love without alcohol. But it wasn’t that long ago that I was anxious, overwhelmed, and drinking a bottle of wine and night to unwind.
So my liver is a little more important than my drink of choice, especially since the alcohol doesn’t effect me in any positive way. I think quitting shouldn’t be insanely difficult, but I’m worried about the withdrawal effects. So I’m tapering off to at least 2 drinks a day and possibly up to 4 if I start having strong symptoms. After a month or so I want to bring that down to just one drink in the afternoon.
Just Over 2 Years Ago Now I Quit Drinking. Put Simply – It Changed Everything
Always have a list of people that support your recovery available. This provides quick access to those who empower you on your recovery journey. Surrounding yourself with people that support you can help alleviate possible remnants of guilt and shame from past behaviors. Stupid people don’t need much to keep them entertained. For example, one of my dogs is called Zoia. The best, most exciting thing on planet earth to Zoia is chasing after a ball. This feeling has been plaguing me throughout the cycles I’ve been going through since November, and everyone here has been very helpful and inspiring.
Is it boring to be sober?
What you'll find out early on in sobriety is not so much that it's “boring,” but that you have a ton of additional free time on your hands. These periods of extra time can become dangerous and leave you prone to relapse if you don't have other outlets to occupy yourself with.
Here are some tips to stop drinking alcohol out of boredom. Just like everything else with this drug, the apparent benefit of ‘reducing boredom’ and ‘making life more exciting’ is a devious illusion and nothing more. Alcohol does not have the power to change external situations and thus does not have any capacity to really make things more interesting. A lot of people tell me that they are drinking so much just because they are bored or lonely. I understand this perfectly because as someone with a hyper-busy mind I too used alcohol to give me some peace from the monotony. Seeking treatment is never an easy step to take.
Is Being Sober Boring? Why Not?
Once you have really looked at your habits, consider alternative solutions. If you like gin and tonic when you’re vegging on the sofa, swap it for fizzy water with lemon. If you know your willpower weakens after 9 pm, get up before then and go and have a warm shower instead.
- My fear is what I see in ex heroin addicts.
- We read books with it, we go on dates with it, we see friends with it, we have weekends away with it.
- I reassessed what matters most to me and found family culture, creative expression, and the spirit of adventure at the top of my list.
- In fact, when you first quit, it feels like everyone in the world is out getting drunk but you.
- I bought a beautiful photo of an ivory blanket for the top of my bed which was soft and decadent.
Pursue outdoor activities like kayaking or fishing. We are stressed-out, overstimulated, tech-obsessed creatures. Pile on some sobriety struggle, and it’s a recipe for madness. I found myself planning little outings when I got sober because I needed to figure out what it meant to have fun again. Finding something to get you out of this boring, sober lull is the point. Engaging in hobbies that have you DOING something is a fantastic way to temporarily escape the raging firestorm in your brain.

The decision is often met with doubt, questioning if sobriety is attainable. It can also spark feelings of shame, guilt, and resentment. However, the variety of treatment options make it easier for individuals and families to focus on moderate consumption or complete abstinence.
It’s the ‘progression’ that brings joy. Try having a conversation with a drunk and you’ll know exactly what I mean. The way alcohol is portrayed and the reality of its effects are miles away from each other. If I buy those products and I use them, the marketing has served its purpose. I feel good about my buying decision and the product has added value to my life.
The confidence you sought from drinking because of boredom was probably born of the desire to not embarrass or make a fool of yourself. Life is interesting enough, don’t let alcohol tell you that it is the fun when actually the fun is in each and every one of us.
